A Guarantee of Payment (GOP) assures payment directly to a health care provider outside the United States for covered services. This helps prevent you from having to pay for services that would normally be covered under your plan.
What does a GOP include?
Scheduled service, date of service to be performed, level of benefits, cost of service, deductible, coinsurance, and more.
Why is a GOP important?
- Using a GOP increases access to care around the world
- Reduces out-of-pocket expenses at those health care providers who do not, per normal practice, directly bill Cigna Healthcare (please note: You are responsible for any applicable coinsurance, deductible or copays per your plan)
- Enables the hospital to bill us directly
- Allows the Cigna Healthcare Medical Review Team to consult on the services being rendered, providing you the best care possible
Who is responsible for requesting a GOP?
- If a health care provider requests payment up front, always ask them to contact Cigna Healthcare per the normal process that they use to verify benefits and confirm payment by Cigna Healthcare for urgent/emergency services on your behalf
- If you are requesting a GOP for urgent/emergency service, call the toll-free number on the back of your Cigna Healthcare global ID card. Cigna Healthcare will verify benefits and confirm payment
- If you are requesting a GOP for a service/procedure planned in the future through consultation with your health care provider, they should contact Cigna Healthcare per the normal process that they use to verify benefits and confirm payment by Cigna Healthcare for any services on your behalf
Cigna HealthcareSM offers a robust network of contracted health care providers offering options for you to economically access the care you need when you need it.
When a Cigna Healthcare in-network contracted provider is available, your costs may be lower, the process will be easier, and the provider may be able to settle your claim directly with Cigna Healthcare. A direct settlement is when the provider bills Cigna Healthcare directly and only reaches out to you for your patient responsibility, such as coinsurance or a deductible, eliminating the need for you to pay up front and submit a claim for reimbursement.
Using a contracted provider brings many benefits
- Access to worldwide network of contracted providers
- As a covered member, wherever you live, highly rated doctors are ready to care for you.
- Simpler claims process
- The Cigna Healthcare network of contracted doctors’ offices will fill out claim submissions for you.
- Find doctors and more with Cigna Envoy
- It’s a quick and easy way to find contracted doctors, hospitals and facilities. You can also get the answers and information you need whenever you need them, submit a claim and more.
- 24/7 access to our global service center
- Collect calls accepted
Stay in network to help expediate the claims process
You may stay in the network of contracted providers to keep your health care simple and cost effective. Or maybe you prefer the flexibility to see whomever you want. Either way, here is an example of the claims process for a contracted provider versus a non-contracted provider.
Contracted Provider:
Using a contracted provider helps to simplify and speed up your experience. There are no forms to fill out, reimbursement is managed by Cigna Healthcare and your provider without your involvement.
Locate a contracted provider through Cigna Envoy.
- Show your Cigna Healthcare global ID card when seeing the provider for care.
- During care be sure to confirm with the provider the hospital they prefer is also contracted with Cigna Healthcare.
- Pay any relevant co-insurance or deductibles.
Non-contracted Provider:
If you see a non-contracted provider or receive care in a non-contracted hospital, it will likely increase the complexity and cost of your experience. You may be required to pay for your services in full and fill out and submit your own claims forms. Non-contracted providers can often cost more because Cigna Healthcare has not pre-negotiated a discounted rate on your behalf. Some non-contracted providers will accept a Guarantee of Payment (GOP). However, if a GOP cannot be obtained, you would be required to pay for your services and complete and submit your own claim forms.
Locate a provider.
- See the provider for care.
- Pay in full for your care unless a GOP can be obtained.
- Gather all the necessary information to submit a claim including:
- Copies of all medical records
- Dates of service
- Hospital/Facility that performed the services
- Country where services were rendered
- Facility fax number, phone number and email address
- Provider name, phone number and email address
- Patient name
- Patient Cigna Healthcare global ID number
- Diagnosis
- Procedure performed
- Fill out a claim form.
- Submit a claim to Cigna Healthcare through Cigna Envoy.
- Please note: your reimbursement may be less than what you paid the provider based on deductible/ coinsurance and any non-covered items/ services.
Please note: Claims must be submitted within 365 days from the date of service for claims to be considered.
